This week I am preparing

to host a special lunch and dinner to mark the centenary of the birth of the Italian Jewish writer Primo Levi on November 27.  They are part of a program of events, and the meals will be at Massi, 445 Little Collins St, Melbourne. He was a writer, witness, scientist, and wrote some of the most important and revealing books about the Holocaust. Bookings to the restaurant 9670 5357. The food will be northern Italian, since Primo Levi was from Torino. It may not sound cheerful, but it will be informative, and supported by excellent food and wine. I shall be introducing him, and reading from some of his work. https://www.massi.com.au

This week I went to the official opening of Pastore, Scott Pickett’s latest restaurant, at Melbourne’s newest five-star hotel, Hotel Chadstone, at Chadstone – the vast shopping and entertainment centre. A brilliant venture, I think. The hotel has a restaurant on its top floor, with views across Melbourne and to the Bay; Scott’s restaurant is at ground level, with entries from the hotel and street level. The style is Italian, the mood very smart casual, and I thought the food was wonderful. Highlight dish? Spinach and ricotta gnocchi with asparagus and broad beans and brown butter. Second favourite was the barramundi, with an elegant tiramisu to finish. https://pastorerestaurant.com.au
